Watering and care
Water the plant thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Fallen leaves indicate that the plant is too dry. Water Dieffenbachia regularly with room temperature water and use a pot with drainage holes to keep its roots out of water.
Place
Dieffenbachia likes bright light, where there is no direct sunlight. Turn the plant a quarter turn every few days to get sunlight from all sides and encourage even growth.
Temperature
The ideal temperature is 18 – 24 degrees Celsius.
Although this plant originates from the rainforests of South America, it tolerates moderate room humidity quite well and is easy to grow.
Transplantation
Dieffenbachia is recommended to be transplanted in spring or early summer, when the plant becomes too big for its pot. Always use a container with drainage holes to avoid waterlogging the soil.
Pruning tip: Cut back Dieffenbachia if it gets too tall. Cut off the top of the plant with sharp pruning tools, leaving a few leaves. New leaves will sprout where the plant was cut.
Diseases and problems
Older Dieffenbachia leaves may turn yellow and fall, this is normal, but if new leaves fall, the plant is too cold. Keep it away from doors or windows where there may be cold drafts.
The tips of the leaves may turn brown due to irregular watering. The plant should be watered regularly, but do not allow the soil to become soggy.
Wrinkled, crispy leaf tips may indicate too much fertilizer. Wash the soil with clean water to wash away any accumulated fertilizer. Wait a month before feeding again.
Leaves lose their variegation if they do not receive enough light. Give the plant bright light, but hide it from direct sunlight – they can burn the leaves of the plant (dry, brown spots appear).
