How to care for a Christmas wreath so it stays beautiful for longer

A natural fir wreath can bring joy throughout the festive season – the key is to choose the right spot for it and keep the branches from drying out too quickly. Fir needles are softer and hold on to the twigs more firmly than spruce, so the wreath stays lush for longer. These tips apply to all our Christmas wreaths.

Where to hang the wreath so it lasts longer

Outdoors on the door a wreath lasts longest – for several weeks. Cold does fir good, and frost and snow do it no harm. Just make sure the wreath is fixed securely so the wind cannot lift it.

Indoors the branches dry faster, so:

  • hang the wreath away from radiators, fireplaces and other heat sources;
  • avoid spots where the sun shines directly through a window;
  • if you can choose, hang it on the stairwell side of your flat door – it is usually cooler there than in the room.

How to keep the wreath moist

Every few days, lightly mist the branches with water from a spray bottle. Spray from the back – this way you will not wet the dried oranges, cinnamon sticks, ribbons and other decorations. Do not soak the wreath in water or keep it drenched.

How to hang it without damaging the door

  • A door hanger hooks over the top of the door – no drilling needed.
  • A ribbon – tie it over the top of the door and fasten it on the inside.
  • For glass doors and windows choose a double-sided wreath – it looks beautiful from both sides.

A few more tips

  • Received your wreath early? Keep it in a cool place until you hang it – on a balcony, in a stairwell or in an unheated room.
  • Needles brittle and falling at a touch? The wreath has dried out – keep it away from candles and open flames. Read about candle safety in our article on the Advent wreath tradition.
  • After the holidays natural fir branches can be composted. Before that, remove the wire, ribbons and any decorations that are not glued on – you can reuse them next year.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a fir wreath last?

Several weeks. Longest outdoors on a door, somewhat shorter in a warm room.

Does the wreath need watering?

No. It is enough to lightly mist the branches from the back every few days.

Does frost harm a fir wreath?

No – fir lasts best in the cold. Heat and dry indoor air do more harm.

Can candles be placed in a Christmas wreath?

Place candles only next to the wreath in non-flammable holders, not between the branches, and never leave them burning unattended.
